MEAP Enabled Black-and-White MFP Devices Provide Unmatched Network Integration, Workflow Customization and Control
Canon U.S.A., Inc., the nation's market share brand leader in black-and-white and color laser copier/printer solutions(i), today announced the launch of four new generation, fully programmable monochrome digital multifunction (MFP) imaging systems: the imageRUNNER 2270 and 2870 designed for small businesses and workgroups, and the imageRUNNER 3570 and 4570 for medium-sized corporate departments.
The four breakthrough black-and-white models - housing Canon's groundbreaking MEAP (Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform) technology atop it's latest imagePlatform architecture - are designed to dramatically increase the level of workflow customization, information security and document process control options for customers.
"Canon sees MFP devices increasingly evaluated by their compatibility with IT networks and the ability to facilitate and automate information sharing and knowledge management across an organization," said Sam Yoshida, director and general manager, Corporate Systems Division Canon U.S.A. "Today's MFPs act more like document management 'hubs' than simple copiers or printers - and with that functionality comes a growing expectation for customizing the devices to ultimately serve unique organizational jobs and activities. Now embedded with the MEAP platform, these new imageRUNNER systems can run applications from within the device - allowing them to more effectively serve as true central communications and document management solutions, supporting custom applications and the latest Internet, network and software technologies."
In addition to the support of its MEAP technology, Canon's new imageRUNNER series offers low-to-mid volume business users a greater range of speeds, volume output and prices. The imageRUNNER 2270, 2870, 3570 and 4570 print at 22 pages per minute (ppm), 28ppm, 35ppm and 45ppm respectively(ii). All are outfitted with Canon's new twin-beam laser printing engine to support increased speeds, quieter operation and superior image resolutions of up to 2,400dpi equivalent x 600dpi for printed pages(iii).
Addressing a range of work environments, from small office to departmental volume requirements, all four models leverage the same breakthrough processing technologies and advanced features. Featuring the latest version of Canon's imagePlatform architecture, each model offers increased job processing speeds, upgraded network connectivity support and true concurrent job processing across all functions - copying, printing, scanning, sending and faxing. A standard complement of 512MB RAM and a 20GB Hard Disk Drive enables advanced document manipulation and storage.
The new imageRUNNER 2270, 2870, 3570 and 4570 MFPs are Internet-enabled, an upgrade to previous imageRUNNER models and designed to permit tight integration with Web-based information systems as well as enhanced security/encryption capabilities, in response to the ever-increasing demand for data security. In addition to Internet-enabled functionality, several new and advanced device software features are embedded in the device and can be activated through the installation of an appropriate optional license key(iv).
The enhanced power and performance of this new imageRUNNER portfolio is "transparent" to the user. Each model offers the same large, easy-to-read color touch panel found in earlier models, and the management and maintenance have been simplified. Featuring a highly compact design, these devices are the first to offer an optional internal finisher capable of delivering stapling and hole punching functions, as well as an optional, second media tray within the original footprint. In office environments with higher volume needs, each device can be configured with up to six paper supply inputs for a maximum 4,750-sheet capacity, as well as support for optional saddle-stitched booklet finishing. Canon's RAPID Fusing system lowers power consumption to unprecedented levels and serves to minimize wait times.
The new network compatible capabilities and feature enhancements impact all aspects of document production and distribution. Highlights include:
Printing: In addition to PCL 5e/6 and PS3 emulation, the new models offer Canon's new UFR II printing technology*, which efficiently balances the print data processing load between a networked computer and the device, thereby freeing up the MFP to achieve optimal print speeds. Other optional capabilities will be made available in 2005, including Web Pull Printing from the device, and encrypted secure printing using a Canon printer driver plug-in module.
Scanning: Canon's optional Universal Send kit enables users to push documents to any network destination - individual or groups of e-mail addresses or Internet Faxes, local Mail Boxes, network folders, and document management systems in one simple, cost- and time-saving operation. With the Universal Send PDF Enhancement Kit, text within scanned documents can be searched using OCR (optical character recognition) processing, and scanned documents can be encrypted prior to being sent to their destination.
As with previous imageRUNNER devices, LDAP support provides for quick e-mail address book lookup. With Canon's new Embedded URL Send feature, network load is reduced by storing large documents in a mailbox and sending only the URL address by e-mail.
For document distribution needs that require tight integration to applications including e-mail, networked fax, document management and ERP, eCopy's ShareScan OP embedded application software delivers benchmark performance, seamlessly linking workflow throughout the document distribution process.
Faxing: All models offer optional single or dual line Super G3 faxing(v) with a PC fax capability. Up to 8,000 faxed pages can be stored in system memory, and there are convenient features including one-touch speed dial keys, direct send functionality, and job forwarding capabilities.
Security and Management: Enhanced security features include Simple Device Login (SDL) and Single Sign On (SSO) authentication, which provides direct authentication for users to the Windows Active Directory. Device access can also be restricted by user Media Access Control (MAC) Address, as well as TCP/IP ranges. The new imageRUNNER models also provide for improved internal hard disk security through hard disk data encryption (168-bit), the optional imageRUNNER Security Kit for hard disk overwrite protection, and an optional removable hard disk**. In addition, users can drive secured print jobs to these imageRUNNER systems through the use of Canon's optional encrypted printing driver plug-in**. For administrators, the systems also come equipped with the capability to set a single device as a reference machine from which management data can be pushed to other specified imageRUNNERs on the network.
The imageRUNNER 2270, 2870, 3570 and 4570 are successors to the imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300, 2220/3320 series and 400S. All four models ship standard with Ethernet network connectivity and offer the capability to add optional functionality including network printing, faxing, and scanning. The suggested retail prices for the main systems are: $5,800, $7,200, $8,800, and $11,200 (respectively).
